ENCAUSTIC OIL MIXED MEDIA WORK

"Easter Sunday"
33 1/4" x 17" Framed. Mixed Media on Paper.

This series of work is about nostalgia and ritual. The images are printed from 1930's dress patterns I found in an abandoned house near Stull, Kansas. The idea of the ritual of dressing up for church and the nostalgia of these children's images taken from vintage patterns appealed to me. The repetitive nature of some of the images in this piece follows the rhythm of this ritual. In combination with the nostalgia, the narrative of the work is now evident. I incorporated sewing to use as a contemporary media but it also serves as a reminder of that time period of the 1930's images. Gender roles were clearly defined during that time when many women sewed, embroidered and did many handwork activities.
